Hey Poker, I like what you say (even if it seems like sometimes we're on different sides of the topic). I admit I write from a specific perspective, and there's a much broader picture out there than I have a grasp on. So your stuff always makes me take a step back and rethink, or at least shows me stuff I never thought of. So, keep the feedback coming, keep me on my toes, and teach me something in the process.

Luke ... I don't know, Jesus was accused of blasphemy too. Keeping it real always shakes up the religious people. Rock on.

If Jesus looked like that cowboy, I'd become a Christian. Oh, too late. I already am one. I know this borders on blasphemy, but let's keep it real.

Pfft, lol. All the cool kids want to be counter-cultural. ;)

Steve, I'm great with the message - I would like to add a different perspective from the level of young people and 'the streets', people who afford very little. :P Sharing burdens of accomodation & material needs is our reality.

Thanks, David, for the feedback. I've never been called a radical before, but counter-cultural has a nice ring to it. :)

Corey, nice point. I think Christ really did "man up". He took his responsibilities seriously. He worked, did his father's business, so that we could all benefit. Who of us would be around now or have that promise of eternal life if he hadn't?

Poker, I think you're right about home ownership. I didn't mean to imply that we should all be property owners and that total independence is necessarily a spiritual virture.

What I meant is that we should each cary our own weight, not be burdens on other people. Then we'll be able to help others. But it's about overcoming our inherent laziness and selfishness. It's about being useful, not just taking up space. Perhaps I should have summarized more like that: Strive to be useful to more than just yourself.

I really like this. What a healthy attitude, and totally counter-cultural in today's society.

In a sense - we may re-consider this question: what *is* self-reliance and independence? Let's help each ther in this regard.

Haha, Galatian is a good devotional for this.
Though, I think that you can still cowboy up at home.
Independence can also mean you pay your share of the bills, do your portion of the chores, and contributing to the wellbeing of your 'host family'. Moving out is not a immediate concern - proving our own work is.

This is because the source passages do not command that each man be in his own house. On the contrary, in OT times, the sons of Jewish household take up the mantle of its upkeep, and work with the father. Sometimes, once they get married their own house is an extension of the family property - as land is hereditory in that communal world.

How does this apply to us? Perhaps, e.g. with the exhorbitant prices of real estate these days - is it really useful to spend so much on a piece of land for yourself, which has no eternal value? With the world crashing, as is said - perhaps we should think at the way our material needs are met and how we can be content.
